Design Your Own Sewing Kit

A Sewing Kit is basically a group of "must-have" notions and tools one will need when sewing. An average kit can be found starting at about $10-$20 at any fabric and notions shop or department store with a crafting section.
But, the best sewing kit you will ever have will be the one you design for yourself consisting of all the average tools and notions along with the extras you've found you cannot live without. Each item will be handpicked by you with the quality and durability that suits your personal style and standards.

The first thing I suggest buying is a medium to large size bait and tackle or fisherman's box to store all of your notions and tools. This type of carrying case will be big enough to store all the sewing supplies you plan on buying over time, as well as keep them organized and all portable. These boxes seem to have endless compartments just the right size for your notions and not to mention the huge space at its bottom where you can hold some fabric pieces, interfacing, and patterns.
They can be purchased for a reasonable price at any bait and tackle shop, department store, or sporting goods.

The basic sewing notions and tools you will need when sewing almost anything are:
A Flexible Measuring Tape, 1 small pair of scissors and 1 pair of shears, straight pins, a pin cushion or pin magnet, a tracing wheel, hand sewing needles, thread, a seam ripper, tailor's chalk, and a sewing guage.

Once you have these basic items in place, begin to personalize your kit by adding other notions and tools that will suit your needs and keep you stocked as well. For example, extra bobbins, sewing machine needles, light bulbs, interfacing, pattern paper, fray edge sealer, specialty sewing machine parts and attachments, etc.

It is also a good idea to collect any odd finds of notions and tools for your sewing kit as well. You may not have a use for these odd finds at the time, but will later on as you advance in the craft or graduate onto other sewing and crafting interests.

Designing your own sewing kit is such an enjoyable experience and it also enhances your love for sewing. Have fun and be creative!
